CONSTRUCTION work on nearly 200 homes has started in the New Forest

Cala Homes has started work on its 17-hectare Knightwood Chase site in Fordingbridge which will see the delivery of 198 homes comprising one-, two, three- and four-bedrooms.

More than 20 per cent, or 42 homes, will be available through affordable means including shared ownership, affordable rent and social rent.

Each property will include environmentally friendly features such as solar PV panels and electric vehicle charging points.

The development will also introduce 9.8 hectares of new public open space including play areas, new pedestrian and cycle routes.

And over six hectares of Suitable Alternative Natural Recreational Greenspace will contribute to an on-site biodiversity net gain up to 10 per cent.

Cala Homes said it is committed to preserving the wildlife surrounding the New Forest and will introduce measures to support and protect wildlife on site through its urban wildlife strategy.

This will include bird nesting features, specialist hedgehog highways, invertebrate bricks, bat boxes and native tree planting.

Alison Deakin, sales and marketing manager at Cala Homes, said: “We’re looking forward to beginning work in Fordingbridge this month and being able to provide the community with a range of affordable homes across the banks of the River Avon.

"Being so close to the New Forest, one of the UK's largest national parks, we’re dedicated to supporting local wildlife on site through our urban wildlife strategy.

“This will ensure we can create a neighbourhood that delivers fantastic new homes in a rural location while creating new green spaces and supporting wildlife habitats.”

Alongside this, Cala Homes said it is committed to supporting the wider community in Fordingbridge through its community pledge, a series of commitments above and beyond legal planning requirements to deliver “positive, measurable social impact for the local communities” in which Cala builds homes.

The pledge covers a range of tailored engagement activities such as volunteering, learning programmes, bursaries and donations.

Further information on the Knightwood Chase development will be available on Cala’s website this summer.
