MORE flats have been proposed on a Bournemouth street some residents have dubbed “overcrowded”.
Poole-based property developer Banks and Bay Developments is looking to demolish a home in Burnaby Road, Alum Chine and replace it with a block of nine flats.
The proposed development is also next door to another development where Stonehaven is constructing a new four-storey block of 11 flats.
Residents living in the road had put up a fight, claiming the street has too many people living there and parking was becoming a problem – with calls for double yellow lines.
But for the latest proposal – which could see more than 20 new residents in the street – the developers have said car parking would be available behind the building.
“The development will not result in any adverse impact upon highway safety,” the developer’s agent Darryl Howells Planning Consultancy said.
“There is good visibility onto Burnaby Road and adequate space for vehicles to manoeuvre and enter and leave the site in a forward gear.”
For many years, the existing building – a Victorian villa known as ‘Fircroft Holiday Flats – was used as holiday accommodation, but that ceased “years ago”, Darryl Howells said.
Developers were given planning consent in May to demolish the building and construct in its place a four-storey block of 11 flats.
Darryl Howells added: “This area of Bournemouth has undergone significant development and alteration over recent years.
“As a result the site lies in an area characterised predominantly by a high concentration of blocks of flats with interspersed hotels and guest houses as well as houses.
“The proposed redevelopment of the site for a block of flats will continue this regeneration to make optimum use of land.”
It’s said the "ageing” holiday let building is in a “poor” state and is in need of a “substantial” financial investment”.
Each flat of Banks and Bay Developments’ project would have two bedrooms, documents show.
BCP Council will decide on the scheme in due course.
