A FAMILY has paid tribute to their brave son with a ‘never-ending smile’ who has died after a long battle with a terminal illness.

Ellis Edwards from Bournemouth was diagnosed with high-risk, stage 4 Neuroblastoma in March 2019 at five-years-old.

He went on to have chemotherapy, two surgeries, high-dose chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy. Once his year-and-a-half treatment was complete, Ellis was able to return to a more normal lifestyle.

Ellis was also featured in the Daily Echo in 2020.

His mum, Carly, and dad, Eddie said: “His never-ending smile and thirst for life enabled him to have so much fun and laughter with his little brother, William, and friends during this time.

“He felt normal for the first time in years and he loved it. During this time our family grew and we had a sister for Ellis, Olivia. Both the boys adored her.

“Sadly, a year after treatment ended he relapsed and found himself back on chemotherapy. It was whilst he was on chemo that he attended cub camp and was later awarded The County Commissioners Commendation for Courage which was awarded by Bear Grylls.

“He then went to University College London Hospitals for an intensive trial. These attempts to prevent the spread were unsuccessful and in April 2024, we learnt that Ellis was terminal.

“At this point, we took Ellis to Dubai for the trip of a lifetime... and it was! He celebrated his 11th birthday in luxury and his eyes sparkled with happiness.

“Ellis splashed in the pool with his brother and sister, drinking mocktails and living his best life. Back home he enjoyed sleepovers, Fortnight, and parties with his group of friends who were so dear to him.

“Ellis met the King and Queen just after that in London whilst having some pain relief radiotherapy.

“He fought the cancer taking over him like a champion. He refused to give in to the beast until the bitter end even travelling to Disney Land, Paris at the end of June and attending his school residential in July, joining in with kayaking, nerf wars, and all the things children should be doing.

“He needed four blood transfusions to allow this to happen but he did what he needed to do to tick off the items on his wish list.

“He was so determined to do everything he wanted to before he let it take him.

“During his last weeks of life, he managed to attend his school award ceremony where he was awarded a certificate for the most inspirational child, he went to school to get his shirt signed and attend the end-of-year party as well.

“Ellis you were adored by so many. You showed everyone what determination can achieve.

“We have no idea where your courage and strength came from but we are so pleased you had it and managed to achieve so much in your 11 years.

“We were so lucky to have you.”

Ellis died on Monday, August 5, 2024.
