THE Green Party in BCP said it "strongly condemns" the recent racist attacks in Bournemouth.

A spokesperson for the Green Group said: "The Green Group of BCP councillors strongly condemns recent racist attacks, including targeted Islamophobia and threats of violence towards asylum seekers.

"These incidents have occurred both nationally and locally in Bournemouth. Years of demonisation and scapegoating have contributed to this alarming situation."

Councillor Chris Rigby, leader of the Green Group, said: "Asylum seekers face broken systems and huge challenges on arrival in the U.K. The hostile language that has so often been used over the past decade exacerbates their plight.

“The Green Party is calling for a humanitarian-based asylum system with safe and legal routes. We urge an end to negative portrayals of refugees by the media and politicians.

“In solidarity with our communities, we stand against racism and call on the new Labour Government to adopt a compassionate approach to immigration and asylum seekers.

“Further, there is an urgent need for real new investment and capacity building in our communities to support cohesion and unity."
