THIEVES tried and failed to steal a Mercedes AMG from a driveway in Bournemouth

The car was parked in an address in the Wallisdown area when four people wearing balaclavas tried to take it at around 1.35am on Thursday, August 29.

Officers are issuing an appeal and crime prevention advice following the theft and attempted theft of vehicles in Bournemouth.

A few hours later at around 3.15am, a Mercedes AMG was stolen during a similar incident in the East Howe area.

It is believed the offenders were using a device to attempt to connect to the car key’s signal and trick the vehicle into thinking the key was nearby, meaning it will unlock automatically and the ignition can be started.

Police constable Adam Carr, of the roads policing team, said: “An investigation is underway into both incidents to identify those responsible.

“I am issuing an image of one of the suspects to demonstrate the tactic that was used and would like to take the opportunity to remind the public to ensure their keyless vehicle is protected.”

How to protect your keyless entry car:

  • When at home keep your car key (and the spare) well away from the car.
  • Put the keys in a screened or signal-blocking pouch, such as a Faraday bag, and check if the bag or pouch is still working every few months.
  • Reprogramme your keys if you buy a second-hand car.
  • Turn off wireless signals on your fob when it's not being used.
