A MAIN road in Dorset was closed for nearly three hours yesterday as emergency services dealt with a car fire.

A vehicle was ‘completely destroyed’ after catching fire on the A31.

DWFRS, Dorset Police and National Highways attended the incident at around 6.30pm.

The cause of the fire is unknown but there is nothing to suspect it was deliberate.

A spokesperson for DWFRS said: “We were called to the A31 at Corfe Mullen at 6.29pm yesterday (1 September), where a car was well alight.

“One crew from Wimborne attended and two breathing apparatus wearers used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire, which destroyed the vehicle. Our stop was at 7.02pm.

“There's nothing to suggest it was anything other than accidental, we wouldn't know the exact cause as the car was destroyed, but most car fires on the road are down to some sort of mechanical fault.”

A spokesperson for National Highways said: “The road was closed for approximately 2hrs and 45mins following a vehicle fire. We assisted with the clear up operation and assessed the road surface before the A31 was reopened.”

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: “We were called at 6.33pm on Sunday 1 September 2024 to a report of a vehicle fire on the A31 in Corfe Mullen. Officers attended to assist with road closures. Road reopened at around 9pm.”
