A HISTORIC ship dubbed the ‘worlds largest paddle steamer’ is docking in Poole Harbour this weekend.

Just over a week after the historic Steamship Shieldhall left Poole Quay, the Paddle Steamer Waverley will be stopping in the area as part of a tour.

To celebrate 50 years of being saved for preservation, the boat will be stopping in several Dorset towns next week.

A spokesperson for Poole Harbour Commissioners said: “We are very much looking forward to welcoming back Paddle Steamer Waverley to Poole on September 9.

“2024 marks a special milestone for PS Waverley as it celebrates its 50th anniversary of being saved for preservation.

“PS Waverley will offer a range of scenic trips along the south coast, including routes to Southampton, the Isle of Wight and Swanage."

Waverley’s 2024 season started on May 17 and will be operating on the seas until October 17, visiting areas such as Swanage and Southampton.

A spokesperson for the Waverley said: “Waverley’s 2024 season is the most exciting and ambitious sailing programme for well over a decade.

“This season will see the ship return to several ports & piers for the first time in decades, there will also be some surprise visits.”
