A TORNADO warning has once again been issued for Dorset.

The Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TSRO) has predicted a tornado could be coming to Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole and the rest of the county today.

The weather forecaster said there could be winds of up to 50mph, hail, “isolated brief tornadoes” and lightning.

A spokesman for TSRO said: “Showers and isolated thunderstorms are already present around parts of south west and south England, and these will tend to move north east through this morning, with other showers and a few thunderstorms developing inland via diurnal heating.

“Deep layer shear is favourable for small clusters or lines of storms to form, and whilst low-level shear is reasonably modest, some backing of the flow ahead of the trough could assist in the development of low-level rotation, and perhaps a brief tornado or two.

“The most likely area of this to occur is across southern counties in the depicted area, but as models are keen to develop rather widespread showers through the day, the risk is drawn in a broader sense.

“Gusty winds and CG lightning will affect some places, along with hail.”

The warning is from 8.26am on Thursday, September 26 until 7pm.

The last tornado warning by the TSRO was less than a week ago, on September 20.

Meanwhile, the Met Office has warned of lightning, heavy rain and flooding in its yellow weather warning expected until Friday, September 27.

Up to 20-30 mm of rain is expected to fall in the space of two to three hours and perhaps 40-60 mm in four to six hours, the forecaster said.

Lightning and strong, gusty winds could be expected along the coast, too.
