THE fire service has issued a warning about using fire doors correctly.
Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is reminding residents they should not prop open fire doors - as doing so means they do not work as they should.
When a fire breaks out in a building, fire doors are designed to keep a fire in one room for as long as possible.
Many buildings, other than most domestic dwellings, are required by law to have fire doors fitted. It is therefore vital for such doors to be correctly specified, installed and maintained, the service says.
A spokesperson for Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Fire doors are designed to keep the fire in one room for as long as possible.
"They prevent further damage and give more time to escape from the building. But this only works if they are kept closed.
"Never prop open a fire door in your accommodation."
