POOLE Sea Cadets proposed expansion plans to more than a hundred members of the community after outgrowing its current headquarters.

The group have been attracting a record number of potential recruits but said it is “confined” but the existing building, TS Drax, parts of which date back 85 years.

A new building would allow the existing unit to expand from 60 cadets to 90.

The Sea Cadet’s award-winning marching band performed for the audience of families, councillors, the public and an MP, before giving space for questions and opinions from visitors.

A spokesperson for the group said the business community in Poole has been “incredibly supportive” in the design process.

The new building makes use of the existing site in Sterte, Poole, and its proposed replacement has been designed by Forum Architects with Tim Gough talking through the intricacies.

Planning concepts have been advised by Gavin Hall of Savills and structural advice from Mark Dawson, of Calcinotto.

Poole Harbour Commissioners and the Port of Poole provided the venue for the meeting.

Mayor of Poole, Cllr Pete Miles, is an active patron of Poole Sea Cadets and gave an enthusiastic speech to the crown.

Vikki Slade, MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, said: “It was fantastic to visit Poole Sea Cadets and receive an update on plans for a new HQ.

“The team they have put together has designed a great space that will enable them to grow and continue their fantastic work with young people.

“I was especially thrilled to hear the Cadet Band play; they are incredibly talented.”
