I READ Conor O’Byrne’s letter (council tax for single people – Echo Sept 30) where he gave his take on government proposals to scrap the 25 per cent discount on council tax bills for people living alone.
Isn’t it ironic that successive governments, for as far back as I can remember, have actively encouraged families to increase their numbers by dangling financial benefits in front of them.
And are still presumably doing so.
Those who monitor the environment warn us that the planet is already overcrowded with more and more mouths to feed and the obvious repercussions which that will bring in time.
And yet those who reside alone, use the least resources and only have one mouth to feed, may be used as a cash cow in helping balance the books.
Seems like everybody’s got rights, and nobody has responsibilities.
