RESIDENTS are being asked for their views on plans to introduce speed bumps at 20 junctions in Bournemouth. 

BCP Council is set to introduce the bumps at junctions joining Christchurch Road through Boscombe and Pokesdown and junctions joining nearby Ashley Road. 

The junctions chosen along Christchurch Road are between King’s Park Drive and Derby Road and along Ashley Road between Gladstone Road and Tower Road. 

Meanwhile, there are also plans to introduce a zebra crossing in Christchurch Road outside of numbers 960 to 976, a toucan crossing in Christchurch Road on east arm of St Swithun's Roundabout and a puffin crossing in Ashley Road on north arm of Christchurch Road Roundabout.

A consultation has been opened by BCP Council seeking the views of residents for the proposals, which can be filled out on the authority’s Have Your Say website. 

In March, BCP Council was given £1.89m to implement additional measures with the aim of reducing crashes along the busy Christchurch Road, which is part of the A35. 

The money is allocated to the road between Iford, through Boscombe and Pokesdown, and St Pauls Roundabout in Bournemouth as well as Ashley Road and surrounding areas. 

Julian McLaughlin, director for infrastructure at BCP Council, said: “This section of the A35 was selected by the Department of Transport and the Road Safety Foundation following analysis of many roads across the UK that would benefit from some additional safety measures.  

“As part of this, BCP Council used Safer Roads Investment Plan modelling to test possible interventions along 100 metre sections of the A35 to determine where safety could be improved. 

“As a council, we have a duty to ensure everyone feels safe when travelling around Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, whether they are walking, cycling or using other modes of transport.” 

Other proposals aimed at reducing crashes along the road include a reduced 20mph speed limit and pavement widening at the chosen junctions. 

Christchurch Road, which runs from Lansdowne Roundabout to Iford Roundabout, had the most reported noise complaints in 2023, a recent Echo Freedom of Information found. 

And the three-mile stretch of road through Lansdowne, Boscombe and Pokesdown is also the road with the most serious injuries or fatal crashes, as previously reported.
