Whenever the Vaccines tour and play a date in Bournemouth you know it is going to sell out and tonight’s gig at the O2 Academy was no exception. An early start was called for as there were two support acts who were both worth arriving early for, to catch their sets.
First up was T.Truman, who certainly cut an imposing figure in full suit and tie. And would have looked familiar to fans of The Vaccines who were already lining the barriers at the front of the venue. Next up were the excellent Delivery all the way from Melbourne Australia. They may have only been together for a short time but they have found a sound that filled the venue and took the crowd along with them. After a short set they left the stage having won themselves a whole new set of fans.
I remember seeing the Vaccines early on in their career when one of my fellow music lovers persuaded me to go along to a gig. Even at that early stage they had something about them, you could tell, or hoped, that they were going to be one of the bands that went on to greater things. And here we are all those years later in a venue packed to the rafters with fans who knew every word to every song and we’re having the time of their lives.
Opening with Love To Walk Away the crowd immediately set the tone for what was to be an energetic, noisy and wonderful next couple of hours.
Post Break Up Sex, Your Love Is My Favourite Band and newer track Heartbreak Kid off their latest album Pick-Up Full of Pink Carnations were part of a setlist that kept on delivering.
The band are tight and seemed to be enjoying themselves just as much as the crowd were. All too soon the opening bars of the anthemic If You Wanna rang out followed by All In White signalling the end of the main set.
The crowd were never going to let the night end without an encore though and were not let down by a band that just seem to be on fire at the moment.
Most of the crowd seemed to be seasoned Vaccines fans but anyone who was seeing them for the first time cannot have left without feeling that they had just seen one of the best bands around at the moment.
Long may they continue to write such classic songs and more importantly play them live.
