A ROAD has reopened after a van carrying fireworks exploded in Blandford.

A Ford Transit van caught fire while travelling past Ashley Wood Golf Club at Wimborne Road, triggering an explosion.

The incident occurred on the B3082, which connects Blandford to Wimborne and was reported to Dorset Police at 9.49pm on Friday, November 8.

The road was closed overnight while authorities dealt with the aftermath.

It has since reopened after sand was spread across the carriageway. However, the damage caused means the road will need to be resurfaced, a task expected to be completed in the coming weeks.

A Dorset Police Traffic Cops spokesperson said: "During the fire, the explosion caused the roof and rear doors to bubble and the side panels to blow out. Part of the roof was found in a nearby field."

Fortunately, no one was injured.

Firefighters from Wimborne and Blandford attended the scene and stayed throughout the night to ensure there was no further risk to the public.
