A BOURNEMOUTH MP has launched a campaign to clean up Bournemouth’s seas and rivers.
On Wednesday, October 23, Bournemouth West MP Jessica Toale asked the Secretary of State for the Environment, Steve Reed, what the Government would be doing to address the unacceptable levels of sewage discharge into the sea in Bournemouth.
Jessica Toale said: “Tackling water quality and sewage pollution is one of my key issues for Bournemouth West.
“The town is renowned for its sandy beaches and clear seas that should be perfect for bathing and water sports alike; sadly, because of polluting water companies, they are not.
“I’ve spoken to many constituents who are put off entering the sea because of sewage dumping - and it has to stop.”
The number of sewage discharges in Bournemouth West rocketed to 57 sewage last year - the equivalent of more than one every week and a massive 594 hours of sewage spilling into our waterways throughout 2023 - impacting not just the environment but people too.
Mrs Toale added: “The Independent Water Commission is a great first step in addressing this, and will report back next year with recommendations to the Government on how to tackle the challenges we have inherited, and those of the future, to restore our seas, rivers and lakes to good health.”
