WITH the proposed changes to the law concerning e-scooters announced by the transport secretary Louise Haig, the intention is to allow all e-scooters to be used legally on the roads.
Whilst many will welcome this, I feel that most people will live in dread of this proposal.
Just imagine for one moment if e-bikes and e-scooters were powered not by electric batteries but by combustion engines.
I do not for one moment believe they would be allowed on the roads without being subjected to tax and insurance, the same as other vehicles.
For far too long they have simply been allowed and promoted because they are seen as a sustainable mode of transport.
Without little thought whatsoever to the safety of them and other road users.
If they are to be used legally on the road, then it is time this hiding behind sustainability ended, they should be taxed and insured just like other combustion engine driven vehicles.
