THE town council won’t object to plans for ‘enhanced’ mobile network coverage and capacity in Christchurch – but does have concerns.

Mobile infrastructure services company Cornerstone is proposing an upgrade to an existing base station located at Cellnet Hurn in Sandy Lane, St. Catherine's Hill.

Cornerstone said there “is a specific requirement for an upgrade at this location to improve coverage and capacity by providing 5G coverage in the area”.

The company written a consultation letter to Christchurch Town Council, detailing the plans and asking for feedback before proceeding with the works.

Christchurch Town Council’s planning and regulatory committee discussed the letter at its meeting on Tuesday, November 12.

According to the minutes of the meeting, a committee member raised concerns about the area’s popularity with pedestrians, families, and dog walkers, before requesting an implementation plan and timeline for the proposed works.

Another member reportedly expressed concerns about the increased energy demand for the upgraded base station.

They sought clarification on measures to manage power demand from the local substation to prevent blackouts, and requested information on how the base station would be independently powered to avoid competing for electricity with local residents.

Members resolved that Christchurch Town Council would raise no objection to Cornerstone’s plans, but would respond to its consultation letter raising concern regarding the power supply for the equipment and ask about the measures or contingencies in place in the event of a blackout.
