PEOPLE in Dorset are being given the opportunity to remember much-missed pets this Christmas while helping raise money for animals in need.
Hillside Veterinary Centre, which is part of the VetPartners group of veterinary practices, is inviting clients and animal lovers to celebrate the memory of pets by hanging a decoration on its Tree of Memories.
They can write their pet’s name and a special message on a star-shaped decoration before adding it to the Christmas tree in the reception area of the veterinary surgery in Wareham Road in Corfe Mullen.
When dedicating a decoration to their pet, owners are invited to make a donation to Margaret Green Animal Rescue to help animals in need this Christmas.
The charity, which has centres in Dorset and Devon, takes in pets that have been made homeless due to a change in circumstances, including those that have been mistreated, neglected or abandoned.
It also arranges veterinary care and helps pets find loving new homes.
The practice is also holding a raffle in support of another worthy charity, StreetVet, which provides veterinary care for pets belonging to people experiencing homelessness.
Prizes, which include pet-care products, festive foods, a hamper and £50 Marks & Spencer voucher, have been donated by businesses.
Tickets will be available from Hillside Veterinary Centre’s reception from now until the draw on December 18.
Steph O’Hara, who is organising the fundraising, said the practice’s Memorial Tree has raised hundreds of pounds for charities and worthy causes over the years.
She added: “Christmas is a season for celebration, but it’s also a poignant time when our thoughts turn to people and pets who are no longer with us.
"The Memory Tree has proved to be a popular way to honour the much-loved cats, dogs, rabbits and guinea pigs that have passed away, at the same time as helping animals in need.
“Margaret Green Animal Rescue does amazing work at the heart of the community we live in, and these donations will help them give homeless, neglected and abandoned pets a brighter future.”
Anyone who would like to support the fundraising appeal but can’t make it into the practice can donate online and the team will add a star to the tree on their behalf.
