A HABERDASHERY emporium based in Southbourne is the Daily Echo's Trader of The Week.
Haberdasherdo is a sewing, knitting, crochet and haberdashery emporium with a store on Southbourne Grove.
Owner Jane Scott celebrated Haberdasherdo’s fifth birthday on Saturday November 16.
Five years ago, Jane took over an old fashion and haberdashery shop.
She said: "I have always had an interest in sewing, knitting and crochet.
"I thought this place had potential and I needed a bit of a change in my life."
Jane recalls five months after opening, they had to close due to do the Covid lockdown.
She says there were pros and cons to this, but as many people started to take up knitting and crocheting from the comfort of their home, the shop was able to continue selling from its online business.
She said: "We were able to keep the local people supplied.
"When we were able to open properly, I had a table at the door and I had people queueing outside for fabric and elastics to make masks."
Haberdasherdo has expanded the wool side of the business, due to a growing popularity in crocheting.
During the celebrations for the fifth anniversary, Jane and her team members greeted customers with a glass of fizz, also holding a raffle to raise money for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
Items in the raffle were made up of presents donated by Haberdasherdo, alongside fabric and wool supplies.
The piece that caught everyone’s eye was a cake with the themes of a sewing box and fabric shop.
Jane said: “We can’t thank people enough for their support of the shop and their generosity in purchasing raffle tickets.
“It was lovely to see so many familiar faces pop in to congratulate us.
“I’d also like to thank my trusty team as well, Helen, Ali and Tracey, who all bring a wealth of experience to the shop, over a hundred years’ experience if you add it all together.”
Alongside this, Jane and her team offer lessons and workshops, from sewing and dressmaking to learning to knit or crochet.
In the future, Jane hopes to expand the shop and put more focus on the workshop side of the business.
