A GARDEN set up by a group to support survivors of abuse and illness has been “destroyed” by Storm Bert.

Barry Rathbone, from Wallisdown, founded Gardening Gives Grace in 2021.

The group was created as a safe, welcoming space for abuse survivors, people with chronic illnesses and disabilities, and anyone looking to socialise and connect with others through gardening and art.

On November 24, Storm Bert caused devastating damage to the garden overnight.

The storm collapsed the greenhouse and destroyed all the young plants, leaving the space in ruins.

Barry said: “I woke up to a loud banging, and I initially thought a tree had fallen down. I came downstairs and opened the back door, and it was absolute carnage. I tried to secure everything before I went back to sleep, but when I woke up, it was wrecked to pieces.”

The storm also destroyed gardening tools, gloves and pots decorated by group members during one of their creative sessions.

Barry added: “It was quite upsetting because all the plants were just getting along nicely, and it ruined everything.”

To restore the garden, Barry has launched a GoFundMe page.

He said: “I funded everything myself and simply cannot afford to replace everything. I’ve had to temporarily stop our meetings until next year while I restock. It would be so sad if we had to shut down because we’ve achieved so much.”

Barry also encouraged donations of second-hand gardening tools and pots from those unable to contribute financially.

He said: “I know times are hard, but if anybody could help, donating even just £1 will make a difference to so many people, both now and in the future.”

Gardening Gives Grace is open to anyone who wants to develop their gardening skills, build relationships, or simply spend time outdoors. Weekly meetings include a cuppa and a slice of cake, with Barry proudly calling himself a star baker.
