A MAN is “lucky to be alive” after he was “crushed by 800kg of glass” at a worksite in the Sandbanks area.

The man, who is believed to be in his 50s, was working at the site on the afternoon of November 15 when the horror incident happened.

One witness, who contacted the Echo, said the man was “crushed by around 800kg of glass” and that he is “lucky to be alive”.

The person said: “Around eight guys had to lift the glass off him, there were wheelbarrows full of it. He’s in hospital with life-changing injuries.

“He has had multiple injuries, but I understand he is stable now.”

Rob McKenzie-Watkins, director of Marco Glass & Glazing which was on site at the time, confirmed an “accident did occur onsite involving glass that was on the ground, not in the air or being lifted”.

He added: “I can confirm that safety procedures, method statements and risk assessments were followed by the site and our team, along with protective equipment were being worn as we do take this with high regard whilst working onsite.

“Whilst the gentleman wasn’t employed by ourselves, or our client directly we have been speaking to his employer on a regular basis for updates on his condition.

“It was a very unfortunate accident that has deeply affected us all and we wish him the best with his recovery.”

Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance’s spokeswoman said the helicopter with the critical care team attended this incident.

She added: “I can confirm that an adult male was taken to Poole Hospital by land ambulance, escorted by our critical care team.”

Dorset Police’s spokeswoman said she couldn’t find a record of the incident.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service did not attend. The Health and Safety Executive said it is not investigating.
