SO a Brighton school is teaching etiquette on a compulsory course.
Well, that shouldn't take more than ten minutes to teach all the etiquette that matters, should it?
There are only three manners that matter when it comes to etiquette.
1) Say please.
2) Say thank you.
3) Don't talk with your mouth full.
I was taught all sorts of other aspects of etiquette from keeping elbows off the table to pushing your spoon outwards when having soup... but what does it really matter?
The only reason why using the right fork or glass at a formal do matters is to avoid being embarrassed because everyone else is following the same absurd rules.
Does it really matter when you take your jacket off or how you word your reply to a formal invitation?
What is needed is for society to wake up and admit that most of the rules of etiquette are down to being snobby, not down to good behaviour.
A compulsory course teaching etiquette at a school is an anachronism.
What is really rude is to make people feel uncomfortable at social functions because they fail to obey archaic and pointless rules.
