DAMNED by sci-fi fans as a Terminator rip-off, Richard Stanley’s directorial debut is actually a very decent stab at science fiction horror without the gloss or budget.
A couple scavenging around a radioactive wasteland find a robot that turns out to be a killer and much of the action is based in their junk-filled and claustrophobic apartment.
Stanley throws plenty of ideas at the screen, much of them influenced by rock videos of the time, while Dylan McDermott does his best as the hero.
Like Marmite, you either loved or hated it on its release in 1990, but sci-fi fans fed up with CGI might gain some genuine satisfaction from a film that cost £1.5 million and made much more.
