Having survived the Grunge Wars and various addiction issues, Evan Dando rallies his latest Lemonheads for a sterling album of cover versions.
For some this would be indicative of a creative dead end, but for Dando – still best known on these shores for his hit cover of Mrs Robinson – it’s essentially been his stock in trade since a mid-’80s tilt at Suzanne Vega’s Luka.
Anyway, Varshons is delivered with his tuneful country-rock punk stomp and as expected as tracks like Gram Parsons’ I Just Can’t Take it Anymore and Townes Van Zandt’s Waiting Around to Die are, there’s a rush to discover Lemmy’s early psychedelic outing Yesterlove, a decent stab at Wire’s Fragile, Christina Aguilera’s Beautiful and Dutch electronauts Arling & Cameron’s Dirty Robot.
