SINCE the release of debut album Fractured Life in 2007, Bournemouth band Air Traffic have achieved semi-fame with TV appearances, a memorable TV theme tune and songs featured in episodes of The OC – but what wins them most fans are their memorable live performances.
Their homecoming gig was never going to grab too many headlines outside the town, but the strong and clearly passionate following who packed into V (formerly Landmarc) wouldn’t have left disappointed. Air Traffic are probably best described as an enviable fusion of Radiohead and Muse, which at times strays dangerously close to Keane territory, and lead singer Chris Wall’s impressive and prominent piano skills will always provoke comparisons to Coldplay.
The whole night had a school reunion feel about it with many of the band’s old friends turning out to support them and join in the celebratory atmosphere.
Wall would have had a great view of the familiar faces from the lofty perch he assumed on top of a giant speaker before orchestrating an acoustic sing-a-long of Just Abuse Me with the crowd belting out every word. The two songs featured in The OC – Charlotte and Never Even Told Me Her Name – both sounded strong live and will no doubt go down well again when they support The Killers at Hyde Park later this month.
Naturally, the band’s biggest hit to date was saved for last. Shooting Star may have only reached number 30 in the charts but it is instantly recognisable as the theme tune to reality TV show Living On The Edge and is an upbeat and powerful sing-a-long tune.
It was a fitting end to a set that ranged from the dark and moody to the anthemic and triumphant.
