MORE than 70 drivers have now been arrested in Dorset during the summer drink and drug driving campaign.
Between June 1 and Sunday (June 21) 74 motorists were found to be over the drink drive limit or under the influence of drugs.
Of those arrested, 32 per cent are under 25 years old.
Police forces in the south west region are carrying out increased patrols and road side checks on drivers, as well as targeting repeat offenders and drivers reported by the public.
Chief Inspector Bob Nichols, head of Dorset’s traffic unit, said the death of Dennis Watts, who was killed in a crash involving a drink driver who was three times over the limit, highlights the dangers of getting behind the wheel when under the influence.
“This is a tragic reminder of the consequences of drink driving – yet a minority continue to put innocent lives at risk,” he said.
“We won’t tolerate drink or drug driving at any time of the year and will continue out high profile stop checks throughout this campaign and the rest of the year.”
The public are urged to call Dorset Police on 01202 222222 if they suspect a vehicle is being driven by someone under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
