CAMERAS could be installed around Rossmore to stop the horrendous incidents of animal cruelty that have shocked the community.

The attacks on animals on the estate came to light earlier this week when a dead rabbit was chopped up and spread over a resident’s car.

It has emerged nine incidents were reported to police in the area in May and June, involving guinea pigs, pigeons, chickens and cats.

Now CCTV is being considered for the Bourne Valley area to catch the culprits.

Addressing a Rossmore and Alderney Safer Neighbourhood meeting on Thursday, Sgt JP Oosthuizen condemned the animal attacks.

He said: “Cameras are being considered.

“We know where the hotspots are.

“It is about catching the people concerned, so we will be changing our approach.”

Residents said the attacks were being carried out with, among other things, catapults and air rifles.

RSPCA officer Graham Hammond said they were “extremely keen” to get to grips with the situation.

Incidents reported to the police in recent weeks include the chasing of a fox and a cat and birds being shot at.

There have also been stories of a guinea pig being squashed and chickens being beheaded.

It is believed pictures and videos of some of the incidents may be being posted on the internet.

It was agreed at Thursday’s meeting there would be a crackdown on the animal attacks as part of a wider focus on anti-social behaviour and the use of catapults.

Residents in Rossmore and Alderney who witness any incidents of animal cruelty are urged to contact the area’s Safer Neighbourhood Team on 07887 633612.
