OPENING a bargain shop in the town once dubbed “too posh” for Argos was always going to raise a few eyebrows.
So the bosses at 99p Stores went for a tongue-in-cheek approach at the opening of their new store in Lymington on Thursday.
Billed as the harbour town’s “poshest day ever”, the event saw classical music played while canapés, truffles and glasses of bubbly were handed out to shoppers visiting the former Woolworths on the High Street.
A petition was raised in 2006 amid rumours that an Argos was coming to the town, but the recession seems to have changed many local attitudes.
Around 100 people gathered for the opening at 9am, with many more soon filling the shop on the look-out for good value buys.
