I've never been to E3 because I'm not rich and I don't actually have anyone who will send me out there.
Yet it feels like I've been there each year because there are so many people going that (thanks to the technology of today) there is likely to be a video or picture of every game, person, presentation, stand, promotional item, girl and bit of carpet that is contained within the walls of the Electronic Entertainment Expo.
It wasn't always the most exciting event for me. I used to be a Nintendo nut and always looked forward to Spaceworld until it got cancelled about 10 years ago.
Now it has become THE show to get excited about each year where the big three hardware manufacturers compete to show off the latest technology and titles that we can all look to get excited about over the next year.
There is some truth in that statement. Most of the stuff we will hear about from the opening presentations may get released before this time next year and some of the stuff will hit the shelves before christmas.
What's the big stuff this year on each platform?
Xbox 360 - Project Natal
Playstation 3 - Move
Nintendo - 3DS
It's hardware and it's all about the latest fad in motion detection.
Microsoft's 360 is looking to extend it's (nearing 5 year) shelf life by releasing the Natal motion detection thing that will sit on top of your telly, possibly on top of your already existing Wii motion bar. So far there are many guesses at the price from £50 up to £150 and a release window before the end of the year.
The tech can detect your body and doesn't require any extra peripherals, just you and your body. Endless possibilities should we believe the demos. Oh and it also does voice recognition.
The Playstation move is easiest to explain when comparing it to a Nintendo Wii, in high definition, with balls on. It's Sony's answer to the Wii and it's going to be a must buy for all Playstation owners.
Whether either of these are going to make more people buy in to the respective console remains to be seen, but both Sony and Microsoft are determined to get a piece of the huge market that Nintendo has dominated.
Nintendo are going to have to pull something impressive out of the bag this year. They're being attacked from all angles. They're showcasing the 3DS this year which promises 3D visuals without glasses. Sounds fabulous and current rumors would have us believe the graphical capability is going to match the 360 or PS3. Personally I'd be amazed if they go any higher than that of the Gamecube, but they need to manage the competition that is now coming in from Apple.
They also need to do something amazing with the Wii. Microsoft and Sony have picked a good time to bring out their version of motion control, and most impulse buy Wii owners may be interested in something of an upgrade this christmas. Nintendo will be showing off a new Wii Party title, but we need something else that will encourage the casual and the hardcore to dust off their consoles.
I hope you enjoy this year's E3 and I shall try to bring out a decent summary of the big three's news as it comes next week!
