FIRE destroyed an area of heathland on Ballard Down, near Swanage.
More than 30 firefighters were needed to extinguish around 600 sq m of burning gorse and undergrowth.
Reports of smoke and flames on the heath began to pour into Dorset Fire and Rescue from around 1.30pm onwards.
Five pumps from Poole, Wareham, Swanage and Westbourne attended, along with three Land Rovers and an all-terrain vehicle.
