A MAN is in hospital and five people have been arrested after a shooting in broad daylight on a Bournemouth housing estate.

The 28-year-old man was wounded by a bullet which passed through his calf in the incident in Kinson on Sunday morning.

His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening but he remains in hospital “for operational reasons”.

Neighbours have spoken of their shock that a shooting could happen in their community.

It is understood a revolver-type handgun was used in the altercation, which took place in Paget Road near South Kinson Drive at 11am.

A man dialled 999 from a mobile phone at 11.05am.

Residents described the cul-de-sac where the shooting happened as a safe area for children to play and “quiet as the grave”.

A 71-year-old woman said she had heard raised male voices and a loud bang on Sunday morning but had not imagined a violent altercation.

“I heard what sounded like men’s voices. There was a lot of shouting going on. I heard a crash, and I thought they had brought a fence down,” she said.

“I went to an evening service at the church and the road was still closed.

“The police escorted me to the end of the road.

“Normally it’s very quiet. I’ve lived here two years and had no problems.”

The quiet road, which leads to Kinson Common, is made up of housing association properties and bungalows for elderly people.

A young mum said the road was closed for at least seven hours and police escorted her family home only after her husband explained the children had to go to bed.

Police have completed a forensic examination of the scene and recovered a cartridge case.

Officers have also seized a car in connection with the investigation.

Witnesses to the incident or anyone with information about the offence are asked to call Dorset Police on 01202 222222 or the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.

Five people were arrested yesterday and are helping police with their inquiries.
