ENGLAND fans will be turned away from a planned screening of tomorrow’s crucial World Cup match due to an influx of travellers.

Police have advised managers at Bournemouth’s Littledown Centre to call off the big screen event in case of trouble.

Extra security has been drafted in to the centre since travellers set up camp in the car park on Friday night.

The cancellation is a blow to centre bosses, who were expecting crowds turning up to see if England can improve on their dismal performances so far and qualify for the next round.

An 8ft projector screen and two plasma televisions have been set up in the bar and a separate screen in another room for under-18s.

Bournemouth council is in the process of taking court action against the illegal encampment.

Around 10 caravans, numerous cars and vans and a tent have been taking up dozens of car parking spaces in an area adjacent to Castle Lane East since around 10pm on Friday.

“The Littledown Centre is a well-used family facility and their arrival is most unwelcome,” said Littledown and Iford councillor Michael Griffiths.

“It is totally inappropriate for them to be camping in this area and very off-putting for visitors. “I am worried this will put people off visiting the centre.

“It is vital for us to move them on as quickly as possible.”

Cllr Phil Stanley-Watts called for extra security measures to ensure that travellers don’t set up home on other “sensitive areas” of Bournemouth during the summer months.

He said: “I’ve never known travellers encamped at the Littledown Centre before; the site needs to be made secure to ensure this can’t happen again.”
