So the whole nation seems to be in mourning after England’s poor performance on Friday night against World Cup minnows Algeria.

Well, to cheer everyone up, we at the Echo have put together some reasons why it’s still good to be a fan of English sport.

  • On Saturday, England’s rugby team recorded a memorable victory against the Aussies down under. The 21-20 victory was the first time England had beaten Australia, in Australia, for years.
  • Phil Taylor is the best darts player in the world. The Power is 15-times world champion and back in May 2010, during the Premier League final, he became the first person ever to hit two perfect nine-dart finishes in a single televised match.
  • Sixteen-year-old English tennis sensation Laura Robson makes her second appearance in Wimbledon's main draw with a centre court date against Jelena Jankovic.
  • Eighteen-year-old Heather Watson, who won the Junior US Open, might yet become the best thing to come out of the Channel Islands since Jim Bergerac and will make her senior Wimbledon debut against Switzerland's Romina Oprandi – a far more favourable draw to that of Robson.
  • In Formula 1 it is the two Englishmen, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, that currently lead the Driver’s Championship and seem the most likely title winners.
  • There are four English golfers currently in the world top ten. Lee Westwood is ranked number three, with Luke Donald, Paul Casey and Ian Poulter at seven, eight and nine, respectively.
  • The England men’s cricket team are the current 20/20 World Champions and the women’s team won the 2009 World Cup, held in Australia, defeating New Zealand by 4 wickets in the final.
  • Three of the top four players in world snooker are from England. Neil Robertson, Ronnie O’Sullivan and Ali Carter are number two, three and four, respectively. Suspended Scot, John Higgins, is the current number one.
