JUBILANT football fans sang in the streets after England’s narrow 1-0 victory over Slovenia.

Drinkers at The Britannia Inn, in Parkstone, kept spirits up with drums, vuvuzelas and singing, erupting into deafening cheers as former Cherries loan star Jermain Defoe tucked away a 22nd minute goal.

The tension was almost unbearable in the final minutes, keeping everyone on the edge of their seat until the final whistle.

Landlord Michael Hicks said: “The atmosphere’s been superb.

“It’s really friendly and cheerful, which is typical of this pub.”

Games prior to the nail-biting decider were ticket only.

“The team needed all the support they could get,” Mr Hicks added. “So we opened it up to everyone.

“Now we get into the bigger games, the World Cup should get a bit more exciting.”

Post-match, the mood was one of relief and expectation.

Kady Stone, 21, from Wimborne, took the afternoon off work to support the team.

“I think we’ll win, it’s all about positive thinking.

“England were rubbish in the first two games, but when we have to win, we do.”

Her friend Matt Bye, 22, from Bournemouth, said: “They’ve done us proud.”

Chants, including England ‘Til I Die and Rule Britannia, showed the crowd were fully behind the boys in red.

Stephen Boothby, from Whitecliff, said: “There’s definitely been a big improvement.

“All England need is a bit of confidence.

“In 20 minutes of decent football, they’ve shown people what they can really do.”

Darren Wheeler, from Parkstone, said: “The pressure on England going into any tournament is ten-fold what any other country expects.

“It’s like 1-0 or 2-0 isn’t good enough.

“They gelled more today.”
