Microsoft
Nintendo
Sony
This year felt like it was all about catch up for Sony and Microsoft. What can they do to tap into this mass market that Nintendo have managed to dominate?
It was said by both companies when the Wii was launched that they did not determine the crazy named, cheap and graphically dated console to be a threat to them.
To some extent they may have been right. There's not a lot of competition really as they're in almost separate spaces. The Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 are really competing for home entertainment domination, whereas the Wii really just wants to have fun and make a lot of money in doing so.
You may be able to guess where I'm going with this. Bourne Gamer names Nintendo as the best of E3 this year.
They haven't been great since they first unveiled the Wii remote, and they've failed every year to show anything truly great.
This year they've turned the tables and demonstrated what they do best. Mascots, hardware and great games.
I don't know where to begin. The 3DS was of no interest to me at all before E3. Now it's a different message, I want this machine. The lineup of games alone are fantastic! They're bringing back Kid Icarus!! So many years of rumours!
They've slammed Microsoft and (more so) Sony by pulling out a handheld console that provides 3D but doesn't need special technology or glasses to do it. Everybody gets 3D from the beginning if they want it. No glasses. No expensive television. How did they do it? Years of research, trial and error.
Nintendo have moved back in from their experiments with user generated content, and they're focussing on the fun again. They're launching some amazing titles for both the Wii and the DS and they're doing it all with a well established lineup of consoles.
I find Sony and Microsoft's attempts at Wii-too devices absolutely grimacing. The presentations felt like a mess, the messages are unclear and the games are not interesting at all to this gamer.
Where does Sony shine? Their fake VP comedian.
Where does Microsoft shine? Xbox LIVE. If they didn't have this they wouldn't be where they are now. Despite the size of the wallet.
