THE eldest of three brothers who all made their mark on the Bournemouth community has died at the age of 102.

Stan Scott notched up 40 years as a teacher before retiring at the age of 60 in July 1968. All but six years of his career were spent in Bournemouth.

His brothers Deric, a former Bournemouth mayor, alderman and High Sheriff of Dorset, and Harold, a magistrate and the first post-war secretary of Bournemouth Chamber of Trade, both died before him.

Stan attended Bourne-mouth School before training as a teacher in London.

He worked in Birming-ham before returning to his home town in 1934 to take up a post at Stourfield School, where he met his wife Marjorie. Just before World War Two, the pair took pupils on what is believed to be the first overseas state school trip, to the Netherlands.

After wartime service in the Royal Signals and Army Education Service, he returned to teaching at Stourfield for a further seven years. He went on to spend seven years as deputy head of Summerbee School, and eight years as head of Pokesdown Primary.

Following his retirement, he was given a testimonial from the council in which his “kind devotion to duty” and “firm yet kindly leadership” were noted.

Widower and great-grandfather Mr Scott spent his final years at the Avon Cliff Nursing Home in Christchurch Road.
