SOME people thought she must have been Gaga to even consider it.
A young woman who performs a tribute act to the current queen of pop has bounced back from a car accident to run a half-marathon in full costume.
Gemma Rose, 28, is used to taking to the stage dressed as Lady Gaga – but running as the star will be a new experience.
“I don’t really like running,” she said. “I find it quite boring but it was watching the London Marathon last year and I just joked about it and said ‘I could do that’.
“Everybody laughed because they know I’ve never run in my life.
She decided to take on a half-marathon in Edinburgh for Epilepsy Research UK, in memory of Faye Wrigglesworth, a friend since school days, who died several years ago.
Gemma, from Charminster in Bournemouth, said: “One of my friends hates Lady Gaga.
“He was going to sponsor me and said ’If you do it in one of the costumes I’ll sponsor you double’.
“It’s not going to be easy. Running is hard enough, let alone running in a spangly costume and a crazy wig.”
Gemma was previously a Christina Aguilera tribute act but switched to imitating the singer-songwriter behind Poker Face, Just Dance and Born This Way last year. Her performance has gone down a storm at local venues such as Poole’s Mr Kyps.
“When I do Lady Gaga gigs, it’s more like being an actor than a singer,” she said. “You have to really concentrate on the performance and acting like a bit of a crazy person.”
But her career as Lady Gaga was interrupted by a road accident last November, when she swerved to avoid a fox on an icy road near Creekmoor and her car overturned. She spent several days in hospital and had to have glass removed from her face, but only had to miss one gig and performed in a mask until she recovered.
The half marathon on May 22 will be a challenge for her costume makers – who include her 83-year-old nan.
She said: “I made most of the costumes with the help of my 63-year-old auntie and my 83-year-old nan. “My nan’s sitting there stitching together a see-through lace dress for me.”
Making a Lady Gaga outfit suitable for running in will be even more of a challenge, especially when it comes to footwear.
“I think they’re going to have to make me some sort of trainer covers,” she added. “I think I’ll draw the line at great big platform boots.”
