DUCKS were killed by mindless thugs firing catapults at a Poole beauty spot.
A group of men, thought to be aged between 17 and 20, was seen firing the weapons at the defenceless creatures at Creekmoor Pond last Tuesday.
At least two adult mallard ducks were killed in the sickening attack.
The RSPCA described the disturbing incident as “horrendous and cowardly” and urged witnesses to come forward.
Imogen Davenport, director of conservation with the Dorset Wildlife Trust, said she was appalled by the attacks.
“We are deeply shocked that anyone would consider needlessly killing wildlife as something fun to do,” she said.
“Female ducks have dependent young at this time of year, so killing adults would put a young brood at serious risk.”
PC Claire Dinsdale, Dorset Police’s wildlife crime officer for Poole, said the actions of the young men were “highly reckless”.
“This is a very distressing offence that took place when families and dog walkers were using the area,” she said.
“It is currently the ducks’ nesting season and many adult birds are trying to sit on eggs or feed their young.”
All the men are described as white and aged between 17 and 20.
One man was around 6ft tall and was wearing a turquoise blue T-shirt. Another man wore a white T-shirt.
PC Dinsdale added: “I am determined to bring these men to justice and prevent any future similar incidents.”
She appealed for anyone who uses the pond and nearby footpaths to be vigilant and call the police if they see any further attacks.
Witnesses and anyone with information should call Dorset Police on 01202 222222.
