A CYCLIST seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident in Poole has warned it is only a matter of time until someone is killed.
Reg Stubbs was knocked off his bicycle as he cycled to work earlier this month.
The driver of the white van left the 50-year-old sprawled on the road, unconscious and covered in blood.
Reg, who remembers little of the collision, came round in Poole Hospital, where emergency medics treated him for head injuries and a broken collar bone.
The mechanic, who was on his way to work when it happened, will take months to fully recover.
“I’m angry the van didn’t stop,” said Reg, “We have all these traffic cameras and all these other cars were about, but no-one saw anything.
“Everywhere you go in Poole it is dangerous for cyclists, but when I took a short cut through Poole High Street, where it doesn’t say no cycling, I got fined £45. There seems to be no justice.”
The drama unfolded on Parkstone Road, close to the Civic Centre gyratory system at around 8.30am on May 10.
Reg told the Daily Echo: “That bit of road is extremely dangerous for cyclists as all the cars jostle for position. It could be just a matter of time before someone is killed.
“I recall seeing the white van. I think I went around it and that is the last thing I remember before waking up in hospital.
“Now I’m off work and I cannot afford to be. I need to pay my rent.”
No-one has been arrested in connection with the accident but police are still eager to hear from any witnesses.
The accident will not put Reg off from cycling to work from his Hamworthy home.
“However, I will be wearing a safety helmet from now on,” he said.
