Colehill residents are vowing not to give up on their dreams for a modern community centre, despite a government funding freeze.
More than 500 young people visit The Reef – Colehill and Wimborne’s youth and community centre – which is housed in a dilapidated old bungalow.
After more than four years of fundraising, work on replacing it with an attractive two-storey building was due to start in July.
But last month their hopes were dashed when the South West Regional Development Agency, which they were hoping would match their £340,000 cash, suspended all new projects. Villagers are still hopeful the sum for the Colehill Lane plans might come through and are organising a cycle ride, barbecue and community fair on Sunday, July 10, to boost the coffers.
Colehill Parish councillor Susan Davies said: “The old building is grossly inadequate and the only option is to demolish it and start again.
“We’re disappointed, but all is not lost. Annette Brooke MP has taken up our cause in Parliament and we’re hoping it’s not dead in the water.
“It’s such a shame we’ve had this enormous setback, but we’re just trying to keep the momentum until we hear for sure.”
The new building will be used by people of all ages, Cllr Davies says.
“Once the building is up, it won’t just be for the children,” she said.
“The memorial and church halls are fully booked so groups and the local schools will be able to use it too. What’s heartening is that the teenagers aren’t just sitting waiting to hear more.
“They’re well motivated and are full of plans to raise awareness.”
The Big Bike Ride will have routes of 10 or 25 miles starting from The Reef at 10am.
The Big BBQ and community fair runs at Colehill First School from 12pm – 5pm.
