TOUCHING tributes have been paid to a cyclist who died in an accident on one of Purbeck’s busiest roads on Thursday night.
Rob Jefferies was a member of Poole Wheelers cycling club and a stalwart of the British cycling scene, riding at a high level in track and time trial events.
Well known in the UK cycling scene, both for his riding and the support he gave to others in the sport, Mr Jefferies leaves a wife and daughter.
Mr Jefferies, who was in his early 40s, suffered fatal injuries after being involved in a collision with a car on the A351, near Wareham, at 8.10 pm on Thursday.
Police say a Renault Clio, being driven by a teenager, was involved in the crash. Mr Jefferies is believed to have been riding with a friend when tragedy struck.
His death was announced on the Poole Wheelers’ message board by his brother-in-law John O’Brien who said: “It’s my sad duty to let you know that my dear friend and brother-in-law Robert was killed in a road traffic accident cycling near Wareham.
“Robert started his racing career as a young teenager riding for the Festival RC and then the Delaune CC where I first knew him. He later rode for Brixton Cycles, Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers and Poole Wheelers.
“His great skill then was as a top track rider at Herne Hill as well as time trials and road/circuit racing.
“He held many club records from a very young age and went on to win national meals. Heartfelt condolences to Jane, Eve, George and family.”
Colin described news of Mr Jefferies’ death as “very sad,” adding: “My thoughts are with his family, can’t say anymore I’m just too upset.”
Graham said: “Rob you were always a great friend RIP. The whole club is in deep shock and all our thoughts are now with your family.
Ian Locock posted: “I’m utterly shocked and numbed by this sad news. RIP Rob” while Dave and Jordan Wade said they were “shocked, devastated, really upset.”
* An 18-year-old Wareham man, arrested in connection with the incident, has been released on police bail while enquiries continue. Witnesses should phone 01202 222222.
