A MOTORIST was lucky to escape serious injury after a collision with a speed boat as he drove through Poole.
The bizarre accident forced police to close one of the town’s busiest roads to deal with it.
The drama unfolded after a small speed boat on a trailer broke free from its tow vehicle and careered across Ringwood Road.
Witnesses say the boat smashed into the front windscreen of the red Nissan, missing the shocked driver by inches.
Paramedics rushed to the scene and the male driver received on-the-spot treatment.
But, despite being shaken up by the incident, it is not thought he suffered any serious injury.
One nearby resident, who declined to be named, said: “This is a really busy area so people are not going to be happy sitting in traffic. Although, you don’t expect a boat to come rushing towards you when you’re driving along do you?”
Traffic quickly built up in the immediate aftermath, leaving frustrated drivers sweltering as roadside temperatures nudged 28 degrees centigrade.
One police officer described the scenes as “traffic chaos”, shortly after the 12.40pm accident on Ringwood Road.
A Dorset Police spokesman confirmed: “The trailer appeared to have become attached and collided with the oncoming vehicle.
“The boat and trailer were recovered from the scene and there was lots of glass in the road.
“The road re-opened by 2.10pm.”
