A “CRUMBLING” support on Boscombe Pier was damaged by a contractor’s boat, it has been confirmed.

Bournemouth Council said the damage was caused by a barge that was being used for remedial repairs.

The company responsible will have to pay for planned repairs in the autumn – not the council.

Cllr Roger West spotted the damaged column at the end of the pier last month and said the outer casing appeared to be crumbling away.

The pier was completely refurbished in 2008 at a cost of £2.4million.

Tony Williams, the council’s executive director for environment said: “We can confirm that the damage to the pier was caused by a barge used for carrying out remedial works to the pier.

“The contractor will be paying for the repairs that are required.

“We do not have a figure for the cost of repairs at this time.”

Boscombe Pier was originally built in 1888, and it also underwent a major rebuild in the 1950s.

The 2008 works included repairs to the concrete structure, replacement of the end section, new wooden decking, handrails, lighting and a new windbreak.

Cllr Ron Whittaker said: “Many members were horrified to see the damage and I sincerely hope it’s structurally safe.

“I question how this damage was allowed to happen. I think members need a very detailed report.”

Cllr Phil Stanley-Watts said: “I am pleased the costs will fall on the contractor.

“I originally wanted the pier to be lengthened, rather than the money spent on the surf reef.”
