GOING, going, gone. A piece of old Poole has been swept away in the cause of the new.
The attractive old Poole Boat Park building on West Quay Road has been demolished to make way for the new approach road to the Twin Sails Bridge.
The listed Victorian building at the end of Wilkins Way served as the offices of George Pittock’s boat park from 1991 until 2007.
In its heyday it provided dry stacking for 770 boats as well as moorings for vessels.
More recently it has been used as a town centre site office for bridge contractor, Hochtief (UK) Construction Ltd.
Slowly and carefully yesterday the old building was taken apart for the bricks and other materials to be recycled, watched by interested residents.
“The demolition of Poole Boat Park building marks another key stage in the delivery of the Twin Sails Bridge,” said Cllr Xena Dion, cabinet portfolio holder for transportation, Borough of Poole.
With the northbound lane and footpath of West Quay Road, along with the bridge viewing platform closed during the day, she apologised for any inconvenience caused.
Construction of the second harbour crossing is taking place over 20 months and the bridge is due to open in early 2012.
The whole project is costing £37 million.
