THE mighty roar is coming back. It’s the news that Bournemouth Air Festival fans have been waiting for – the Vulcan bomber is returning for this year’s event.

Organisers will be hoping that this time it will get to perform properly – last year the weather put paid to anything but an impromptu Thursday display.

The Avro Vulcan XH558 is always a massive crowd-puller and will perform on Sunday, August 21, and, if a sponsor is found, on the Saturday of the festival as well.

Dr Robert Pleming, CEO of operators Vulcan to the Sky Trust, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be returning this summer. Bournemouth is a highlight for us all and to be able to release the Vulcan effect again this year is something we are all looking forward to.”

The Cold War jet also performed three times in 2009.

Air festival director Jon Weaver said: “Securing the Vulcan is a great achievement for the town and the festival; we are delighted to have this fantastic aircraft in the display line-up again this year.

“The Vulcan is always popular with festival-goers, so Sunday’s display will be much anticipated.”

Now organisers of the event, which runs between August 18 and 21, are asking businesses and individuals to help secure the aircraft’s Saturday display by donating £200+VAT to become an Air Festival Patron.

Jon added: “We know how much the crowds enjoy watching the Vulcan and to secure a second display from this historic aircraft would be fantastic, but we can only do this with the support of the Patrons Scheme.”

Vulcan XH558 returned to flight in 2007 and has cost the trust more than £10 million to keep in the air.

Some cash has come from the Heritage Lottery Fund and sponsorship, but the majority has been donated by more than 40,000 people worldwide.
