WIGHTLINK has launched a second attempt to gain planning permission for vital improvements to a New Forest ferry terminal.

The latest batch of planning applications received by the district council includes a proposal to upgrade the Wightlink complex in Undershore Road, Lymington.

The existing terminal is too small for the new Lymington to Yarmouth ferries, which are taller than their predecessors.

Foot passengers can no longer walk up the covered gangway that linked the waiting area with the old C-class vessels. Instead they must use the same route as cars, coaches and lorries when getting on and off the new boats.

Now Wightlink has made a second application to install new passenger ramps and linkspan bridges as well as improving the docking arrangements.

Earlier this year the company lodged an appeal against the council’s non-determination of its original proposal. However, managers also decided to submit a duplicate plan in the hope of avoiding a long and costly appeal process.

The latest application has already resulted in four responses – two in favour and two against.

Those supporting the proposal include Bobby Lock, community rail development officer for the Brockenhurst to Lymington branch line, which serves the ferry terminal.

In a letter to the council she says: “I hope the planning application will finally be granted. The berthing arrangements as they stand at the moment cause considerable disruption for staff, tourists and commuters alike.”

A special meeting of the council’s planning and development control committee will be held on June 22 to debate the proposals.

A Wightlink spokesman said the cost of the work – due to start at the beginning of next year – had yet to be finalised.
