LOVE Bournemouth, loathe litter.
That’s the message council bosses are trying to get across to people in the town as part of a £1 million campaign to keep it clean.
Yesterday, chiefs unveiled tough anti-litter messages that will be displayed on Bournemouth’s Yellow Buses through the summer as part of the Smart Streets|initiative.
The “Love Bournemouth Loathe Litter” slogan will appear on the sides of 20 buses during June and July with the aim of encouraging both visitors and residents to dispose of their waste responsibly.
Yesterday councillors Michael Filer and David Smith launched the campaign at the Yellow Buses depot on the Yeomans Industrial Estate.
Cllr Smith, portfolio holder for communities and planning, said: “Litter is a plague on our society and everyone has a duty to dispose of it in the proper manner.
“Dropping rubbish is anti-social, unpleasant and an eyesore on our town. I hope everyone takes heed of this campaign message so Bournemouth remains beautiful.”
Cllr Filer, portfolio holder for transport and technical services, added: “Bournemouth council is forced to spend millions each year on street cleaning.
“Litter is a problem and in the summer can be an even greater headache for our street service teams as thousands of visitors come to enjoy what a wonderful place Bournemouth is.
“I urge all residents and visitors to look after our town and do the right thing by putting their litter in the bin.”
The council said the £1 million would be spent over a year on street cleaning and anti-litter schemes.
