The man, who was being treated in hospital, was a front seat passenger in a silver Vauxhall Corsa being driven by a 19-year-old man from West Chinnock in Somerset.
A spokesperson for Dorset Police said the car left the road and collided with the tree on the westbound carriageway of the A30 at Babylon Hill around 7.54pm.
