STUDENTS planning to take a year out of their studies have been urged to attend a special event at Canford School later this month.

Open to all, Gap Year Fairs give free and impartial advice to those considering projects including community work, conservation, children’s camps, language programmes and teaching.

Run by volunteers, the organisation is in its 14th year and aims to point young people in the direction of worthwhile, well-planned and safe projects.

Volunteer Lawrence Lockhart told the Daily Echo: “Gap years are becoming a bit of a market and there are a lot of organisations out there which are commercially-driven and are not as good as others. We represent about 120 reputable organisations and we suggest to young people that a well-spent gap year should have three components – raise the money required yourself, enjoy low cost overseas travel and spend a period committed to a structured project or programme.”

The fair will be at Canford School on Monday June 27 from 4-7pm. There is no charge for admission and there will be a huge range of options to consider.

Organisations include Project Trust, which offers eight and 12-month placements in Africa, Asia and the Americas. Projects range from social care in Malawi and teaching in Swaziland to journalism in Honduras and outward bound in Malaysia.
