PLANS to refurbish run-down Druitt Gardens have taken another step forward following the approval of an action plan.
In 2009, a Landscape Master Plan for the town centre gardens was adopted by Christchurch Borough Council.
Since then a programme of work, including tree felling to remove some non-native species, and an archaeological survey on the historical site has been undertaken to ensure the site is ready for more detailed refurbishment.
At a meeting of Christchurch council’s community services committee on Wednesday, councillors approved a detailed plan.
The plan will see a new entrance being created from Sopers Lane as well as boundary fencing and resurfacing of footpaths.
A new performance space will be provided and picnic tables and benches installed.
A key feature of the work will be a cycle path through the gardens as part of a new cycle route from Barrack Road to the Priory School, which was requested in a petition to the council in April 2011.
Around £44,000 has already been earmarked for the work in the gardens while a bid for a further £121,000 to complete the work will go to the council’s resources committee at the end of June.
Most of the work is expected to be completed by the end of 2012, though some elements of it may take a little longer, including possible art works which could involve the community.
Cllr Sally Derham Wilkes, chairman of the committee, said: “This is very good news as the work will improve the use of the site for all sections of the community from those who simply want a quiet refuge from the bustle of the High Street to those who have an interest in learning more about the natural history and archaeology of the site.
“The cycle route will provide a safe route to school and will promote healthy lifestyles as well as helping to reduce car emissions in the locality of the school gate.”
